Well, well... here we are once again

View of the Greenland Ice Sheet near Jakobshavn Glacier

I won’t talk about politics. It’s not worth it. Remember the Greenlandic word that captures this moment: ajungilaq. It is what it is, so we just have to move forward.

Ajungilaq and the principle behind it is so helpful in uncertain times. It’s a form of resilience. The weather is often unpredictable in places like Greenland and more so as the climate continues to change. But the ancient wisdom doesn’t fail, you don’t go out when the weather is bad. You wait until it clears and then get on and move forward.

I’m using this wisdom daily just to get through the day. I want to be able to see the outcome now so I can prepare and react. But we have to wait. And so we wait. I don’t know for how long.

I’ve been deliberately posting on social media with surgical precision and I’m glad the response is strong. People don’t need more noise about Greenland. They need images that they can give context and compassion. It’s the core of what I do. Some posts show what the majority of the country actually looks like - the desolate inland ice sheet. Others are meant to be a happy dose of lovely images in summer and winter that showcase normal life. Some show the majestic nature and the incredibly strong wildlife that can survive these conditions.

I don’t post all at once. I use restraint and a cadence so I don’t overwhelm or oversaturate the audience that knows next to nothing about Greenland.

Again, I don’t know what the future holds and that’s not my responsibility. So I will continue doing what I do. I want to share the true Greenland with the world and be the bridge that connects to local lives, not just a story. Now I’ll go back to reading the news and passively listening to podcasts and broadcasts about this. I’m picky about where I get my news from. I like getting it from the inside: KNR, Sermitsiaq, DR (Denmark), Ritzau newswire, GZERO, Ian Bremmer, and The Economist. The rest, I read on or listen depending on what the google alert says. I’ve learned about 10 new podcasts today.

I’d still like to see more Greenlandic voices showcased by the media. I can help connect so if you’re working on a project, do let me know and I can help you get to the right person.
