The first of many visits to get imaging and collect the deep traditional ecological knowledge from locals and hunters in Ittoqqortoormiit on polar bear habitat in summer and winter in the area that could be in the license areas for the oil exploration in the Jameson Land Basin. We will do a literature review of what’s already done and continue from there.

This is urgent.

This project should be funded years ago by the company itself but as far as I know on 11 July, this study has not taken place so we urgently need to raise funds for it on our own and on our terms.

These funds will go towards capturing priceless information from the people that know the area and the animals best. We will try to photograph the area as much as possible before any activity takes place and after (if the permits are secured).

The scope is vague because this is a live situation that is developing by the day. We will obtain more details as we build a team to do this work. We may be in collaboration with nonprofit organizations, so please contact me if this interests you first because a tax deductible contribution might be a possibility rather than checking out on this page.

All of the photos were taken by me. For the winter images, they were on a small boat in 23 April 2025 in Scoresbysund with my private guide. It was the first time I was able to get close enough to a bear to get artistic photographs.

The summer images were deeper in the Scoresbysund fjord system aboard a cruise, much closer to the drilling site and nearby. We saw five different bears in this area. One was resting besides a magnificent waterfall, one curious about us, and a mom and two precious cubs.

We must properly preserve the local knowledge.
